Located approximately 40 km from bustling Jodhpur, you’ll be welcomed like long lost friends to a quaint, utterly charming retreat with a warm, bohemian spirit. Witness the elegance of a bygone era in a grand yet rustic heritage hotel with stone archways, lush green gardens and a refreshing swimming pool.
The ancestral home of the landowners in the area, the fort hotel is well maintained and run by a wonderful family who are attentive but not intrusive. Homestays offer something a little different than a standard hotel and Chandelao Garh stands out for the authentic experience of traditional Rajasthani hospitality in a tranquil village setting.
You’ll receive a warm welcome by the owners and a tastefully decorated room with period furniture, air conditioning and a private bathroom. Outside each room is a small patio, perfect for winding down at the end of the day as you marvel at the starry desert sky.
The well-kept hotel grounds are filled with flowers and the sounds of peacocks and parrots, in addition to comfortable seating areas, a library and an onsite spa. Sit on the rooftop restaurant and embrace the flavours of traditional Rajasthani cuisine, cooked with genuine passion and impeccable style using local produce and spices. Breakfast is plentiful and lunch can be cooked upon request.
Walk through the typical Western Rajasthan village still caught in a time capsule and you will find local craftspeople ply their trade, animals graze, women in colourful native dress fetch water from the wells and lakes, children play in the street and everyone welcomes visitors with a friendly greeting. Explore alone or a hotel member of staff will be happy to guide you, along with planning any excursions and recommendations of places to visit from a jeep safari to bird watching and shopping in the local bazaars.
Chandelao is home to a social enterprise; a crafts development and uplift effort called Sunder Rang. The Centre is located just outside the gates of the Garh where you can browse and buy handmade items in support of the local community. These are of fantastic quality and wouldn’t be out of place on an Etsy store!
What’s more, you also have the opportunity to volunteer for the local village people of Chandelao by teaching English at the village school, designing dresses or learn sewing and embroidery with the ladies of Chandelao.
What we loved
We loved walking through the local village connecting, communicating and learning with curious minds, from the children and from us. Sitting on the rooftop with a glass of wine during sundown as we watched everyday life unfold before us, truly enriched our stay in India. The people we met, the sounds, the tastes and the scents made for an authentic, meaningful experience and Chandelao Garh far exceeded our expectations.
