Chandelao Garh, Rajasthan, India

Experience the real India in a charming budget homestay set in a traditional village close to Jodhpur

Experience the real India at Chandelao Garh, a charming homestay in rural Rajasthan close to the bustling city of Jodhpur. Stay in a village renowned for its independent people, its colourful clothing, handicrafts and traditional way of life.

  • Traditional village setting
  • Budget homestay not compromised on service or comfort
  • Relaxing stay close to the bustling city of Jodhpur
  • Refreshing swimming pool and rooftop restaurant
  • Volunteer opportunities and an onsite social enterprise

Enter the hotel through the magnificent stone archway and you are welcomed into another world; a grand yet rustic fort hotel with stone archways, lush green gardens and a refreshing swimming pool. Before you stands the elegant original residency with its red Jodhpur sandstone carved in elaborate 18th century Rajput style, the ancestral home of the landowners in the area.

Chandelao offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic cities of India in a tranquil village setting where you’ll find a refreshing pool, rustic and quaint reading areas and attentive staff with a smile. The well-kept hotel grounds are filled with flowers and the sounds of peacocks and parrots, in addition to comfortable seating areas, a library and an onsite spa.

Walk through the typical Western Rajasthan village still caught in a time capsule and you will find local craftspeople ply their trade, animals graze, women in colourful native dress fetch water from the wells and lakes and children playing in the street. For those seeking adventure, book an exciting jeep safari and a camel ride, or do a spot of shopping in the Bazaars of Pipar. What’s particularly special about this property is the social enterprise located just outside the gates of the Garh; a crafts development and uplift effort called Sunder Rang where you can browse and buy handmade items in support of the local community.

What’s more, you also have the opportunity to volunteer for the local people of Chandelao by teaching English at the village school, designing dresses or learn sewing and embroidery with the ladies of Chandelao.

All 23 rooms have been tastefully decorated with period furniture, air conditioning and a private bathroom. Beds are comfortable and covered with hand-embroidered Rajasthani bedspreads, while blankets and quilts are available for when the nights turn chilly. Outside most rooms you will find a small patio, perfect for winding down at the end of the day as you marvel at the starry desert sky.

Each room is different and has a story of a bygone era, for example room Number 9 was the old toshakhana where the valuables were kept and rather interestingly, there is a secret place in the room, see if you can find it.

Chandelao Garh is the ideal spot for groups travelling through Rajasthan, families and friends, solo travelers, honeymooners or those simply seeking a slower pace of life.

Three wholesome meals are prepared and served each day in a traditional kitchen using ancient Rajasthani recipes with local ingredients and cooking methods.

Locally-grown, seasonal vegetables, home made yoghurt and paneer (cottage cheese) are regular ingredients, along with fresh home-made chapatis made of unrefined whole wheat flour, hand-kneaded and rolled, and cooked over a wood fire for a delicious, slightly smoky flavour.

Breakfast is western-style, with your choice of fruit juices, home-made yoghurt, cereals, fresh fruit, toast, eggs cooked-to-order, tea, and coffee along with a traditional Indian dish such as parathas or puris.

Lunch and Dinner are traditional Indian meals, not highly spiced but deliciously flavoured with judicious use of a wide range of freshly ground herbs and spices. Dinner starts with a tasty vegetable soup, followed by a wonderful buffet of chapatis, rice, spicy vegetable dishes, daals (lentils), salads, and a meat dish. The meal ends with a traditional sweet for which the Jodhpur region is famous.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the colonnaded main building, while you can enjoy dinner served on rooftop balcony overlooking the village with the lights of Jodhpur in the distance.
