Reserva do Ibitipoca, Lima Duarte, Brazil

One of Brazil’s finest small hotels and a secluded eco-conscious natural paradise

It’s not everyday that you have the opportunity to stay in a nature reserve, not a hotel set within one, but a reserve of lush green valleys and rainforests, stunning mountain vistas, grottoes, waterfalls and curious caves.

  • Luxurious, eco-conscious sustainable living
  • Nature’s paradise
  • National park setting
  • Delicious Brazilian cuisine
  • Adventure and relaxation

Located in Minas Gerais within an area of natural and historical wealth yet only hours from Rio, is a beautifully restored 18th century-farmhouse of Fazenda do Engenho with just a handful of distinctively rustic yet elegant rooms and suites spread across 3 houses. Step back through the centuries and experience the elegant simplicity of rural life – swim in natural pools, explore the magnificent surroundings and embrace the excursions on offer to facilitate a deeper connection with nature.

Acres of abandoned farmland has been converted into a nature reserve, and it’s here that you’ll find a mix of local heritage and modern comforts with an onsite spa set up in a barn, daily yoga classes to balance your mind, a small swimming pool and a wood-fired outdoor jacuzzi for you to sit back, relax and recuperate. It’s in and around Engenho’s Farm lodge that you’ll find everything from the spa to the airstrip to the restaurant and the stables with their famous fleet of horses. You will also find comfortable communal areas with hammocks of the spectacular views, a stone courtyard and fire pit, a living room and dining room, and a cosy lounge stocked with movies and documentaries.

Guided daily excursions on foot or horseback explore the reserve’s caves, valleys and natural wonders, offering a welcome escape from everyday life. Explore the local traditional village of Mogol, challenge yourself and hike to the top of Hawk’s Rock, discover waterfalls and natural pools or take a leisurely horseback ride, and afterwards you can sink into loungers by Engenho’s Waterfall and unwind with a frosty caipirinha. Alternatively, cap off an exhilarating day of adventure with a therapeutic massage on the river’s edge and a private, romantic dinner under the stars.

Engenho’s Farm serves as the Reserva’s main lodge accommodating 8 large suits decorated with local handicrafts, wooden furniture and modern-day comforts including an iPod dock, Egyptian cotton bedding, Trousseau toiletries and personalised Havaianas. Super-kingsize beds (or two singles if you prefer) come with comfortable furnishings, bathrooms with underfloor heating, showers and a freestanding Victorian-style tub.

Set aside from the main house is Carlinhos, a typical farmhouse suitable for small groups and families, and Casa Das Montanhas, two simple mountain cottages that can only by accessed foot, horse, or 4×4 vehicles.

The absence of television in the suites is an invitation to forget about the outside world and live intensely during every moment on the Reserva for more mindful, meaningful slow travel.
